Backbeat: Vice's Noisey.com CMJ Showcase, With Twin Shadow, Caveman, Bleached and More

CMJ week continued strong Wednesday night at a packed Santos Party House in New York's Chinatown with Vice's Noisey.com CMJ Showcase (presented by Supra NYC). And with a lineup featuring Twin Shadow, Caveman, Bleached, Pujol and Main Attrackionz, needless to say it was one of the evening's hottest tickets.

Backbeat
Caveman (L-R): David Marek (Girlie Action), Inge Colsen (PR & marketing, Girlie Action), Jonathan Pardo (manager), Jeff Berrall (bass), Stefan Marolachakis (drums/backing vocals), Sam Hopkins (synth/backing vocals), Jimmy Carbonetti (guitar), Matt Iwanusa (lead vocals/guitar/percussion).

Performing their first of 10 shows this week were New York's Caveman. The quintet's set could be heard for miles with volume and fuzz harkening to days of shoegaze, but with added vocal harmonies and thundering percussion. Girlie Action Media publicist Inge Colsen noted that the band, whose self-titled debut comes out on Nov. 15, has been on tour with Here We Go Magic, White Rabbit and the War On Drugs and has gotten bountiful press -- indeed, manager Jonathan Pardo pointed out several journalists in the house, not to mention Daniel Glass from Glassnote Records.

Backbeat
Bleached (L-R): Scott Hopkins (manager, Rainstorm Music), Jennifer Clavin (guitar/vocals), Jessica Clavin (guitar), Michelle Cable (booking agent, Panache Booking), Kevin McCarthy (bass), Scott Shannon (drums).

Another band performing a marathon of shows this week is Los Angeles' Bleached. The Clavin sisters, Jennifer and Jessica, kept the energy up with punk riffs and shouts vaguely reminiscent of the Misfits. Supporting a new 7" coming out on Suicide Squeeze Dec. 6, Panache Booking's Michelle Cable (who booked 20 bands throughout the week, including Shonen Knife, Teengirl Fantasy and Slowdance) elaborated on their tour plans. "They're on a three week, four week cross country tour right now. They're going to be on tour like two-thirds of the entire year [2012], they are going to SXSW. They're going to get out there this fall," Cable said. She also mentioned Bleached is touring with Black Lips in November.

Backbeat
Twin Shadow (L-R): Eddie Bezalel (manager, Headless Heroes), George Lewis Jr. (vocals/guitar), Wynne Bennett (keyboards), Andy Bauer (drums), Russell Manning (bass).

The show was closed by a very well received set from New York's Twin Shadow. George Lewis Jr. and company plowed through a set lasting a little over an hour, with several songs off of their debut, "Forget." Their brand of synth-laced new wave had all of Santos moving and screaming for an encore, and they gladly obliged. Twin Shadow manager Eddie Bezalel said the band was heading into the studio in November after a long year of touring to record their now-untitled sophomore effort. While the band is focused on recording their next album, Bezalel did mention they would do a few dates in Australia next year for the Laneway Festival.
