On Thursday night (Oct. 20), Hyundai Veloster took over the Re:Mix Lab in NYC's Chelsea Market to preview "Re:Generation," the upcoming 2012 musical documentary starring DJ Premier, Mark Ronson, Skrillex, Pretty Lights and The Crystal Method.
Guests -- including Hyundai's VP of Marketing Steve Shannon and Dominic Sandifer of Greenlight Media & Marketing -- nibbled on Pop Burger, watched a trailer of "Re:Generation" then participated in a Q&A session with DJ Premier and director Amir Bar-Lev, who shared their experiences on The Grammys' co-production.

During an hour-long turntable set from Premier, Bar Lev dished on filming the DJs, each of whom were tasked to collaborate on music outside of their respective genres (with features from artists including members of the Doors). "The challenge of letting things happen organically, while also getting things to look right, was particularly acute when dealing with people that I admire," Bar-Lev told Billboard.biz.
"We were deeply honored by the way artists like Erykah Badu, Mos Def and Premier let us into their process. This was a collaboration between a lot different people in a very short period of time but we wanted to capture the dynamic drama of reality, and also make it look fantastic."

VIBE's West Coast Editor Jamal Munnerlyn hosted the Q&A early in the night and later admitted to hearing DJ Premier's collaboration with the Berklee School of Music Symphony Orchestra. "In the past two weeks I've been in the studio with Nas and Premier when they did the cut and it was unbelievable," he said.

DJ sets from Jamie Biden and AndrewAndrew followed DJ Premier, who stopped to chat with Pete Rock, then explained what he learned while filming "Re:Generation." "I think I'm a better producer now, just from doing the documentary," he told Billboard.biz "I respect music a million times more after going to classes, meeting with my mentor and learning how to expand on it."
Premier is currently working on projects from rappers Khalil and NYGz on his label Year Round Records, in addition to an album with Freddy Foxx called "Bumpy Knuckles" and "DJ Premier The Collection" and the "Pete Rock vs. DJ Premier" album.
Hyundai Veloster will host upcoming "Re:Generation" screenings in Las Vegas (Nov. 1-4), Miami (Dec. 2-3) and Los Angeles (Dec. 7-11).
