Dean Dillon, who has penned hits for George Strait, George Jones, Kenny Chesney and more in his prolific career, was honored as the newest BMI Icon at Tuesday night's (Nov. 5) BMI Country Awards. After Strait, Chesney, Luke Bryan and Lee Ann Womack performed his songs, Dillon delivered a remarkably poignant, humble and candid acceptance speech. He began by noting that "when Del [Bryant, BMI's preisdent and CEO] called me and told me that I was the Icon for 2013, I started cryin’ and I’ll tell you why: I live, eat, sleep and breathe songs, it's all I've ever done. It's all I've ever loved to do." Dillon went on to thank the many people who helped him along his career, spoke fondly of traditional country music and recalled challenging times when he slept in a coal bin.
