The band that accompanies the biker saga on FX's Sons of Anarchy is asking its gang of fans to help support an album of all original songs.
The Forest Rangers, led by musician and music supervisor Bob Thiele Jr., have launched a PledgeMusic campaign to record and release a new album. Besides the regular band members -- Davey Faragher on bass, Phil Shenale on keys, Greg Leisz on pedal steel guitar, Matt Chamberlain on drums and Gia Ciambotti on background vocals -- guest vocalists will include Alison Mosshart, Amos Lee, Joshua James, the White Buffalo, Billy Valentine, Audra Mae and Justin Warfield.
Thiele says they already have six tracks mixed and another five in various stages. "We're having the best time," says Thiele of the recording, while sorting through hundreds of T-shirts that are being offered with $30 pledges. "I feel like I'm 14, in the garage with my first band. There's a real lack of cynicism with these guys."
The PledgeMusic site is the only place where the album can be pre-ordered -- on vinyl, CD or as a download -- and high-end offerings include a chance to sing on stage with the band ($5,000), have Thiele produce you singing with the Forest Rangers ($12,500) and a house concert ($3,500).
The idea for the recording grew out of an offer to make a record the traditional way, but Thiele thought it would require additional deep pockets to make the album he wanted. He figured why not go DIY.
"This record is truly a passion project," Thiele writes on the PledgeMusic page, "So we want those who are passionate about our music to be involved in the process. We knew from the start that we wanted to create this record collaboratively, with the people that want to hear the music just as much as we want to make it: the fans."
