President promotion, Interscope Geffen A&M

There was nothing unclear about the success achieved in 2013 by Brenda Romano, president promotion at Interscope Geffen A&M. From Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” to Lana Del Rey and Cedric Gervais’ happy results with “Summertime Sadness,” Romano and her team oversaw a phalanx of hits from veterans and newcomers alike. Romano crafted specific promotional campaigns that led to multiformat smashes for a diverse roster. In addition to reviving Thicke’s career with “Blurred Lines,” the longest-running No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this year, Romano helped take Maroon 5 to the top of the Adult Top 40 chart with “Love Somebody,” which marks the group’s eighth chart-topper on the list, tying for the most No. 1s in the 17-year history of the chart. She also led Eminem and Lady Gaga back to the upper reaches of the charts. But the jewel in Romano’s crown this year is the number of newer acts she has brought to mainstream prominence, including Del Rey, Imagine Dragons, Zedd, Phillip Phillips, Frank Turner, Tame Impala and the 1975. Those hits add up: The latest Nielsen SoundScan industry market-share numbers, including track-equivalent albums, rank IGA at No. 1 with a 7.6% share. —Melinda Newman
