EMUSIC MERGES WITH E-BOOK DISTRIBUTOR K-NFB READING

Online music service eMusic merged on Monday with an e-book distributor K-NFB Reading to form the new company Media Arc Inc. Media Arc "will offer a comprehensive source of more than 17 million songs, 40,000 audio books and 600,000 eBooks," according to a statement, while eMusic and K-NFB will remain as operating units of the new company.

UNIVERSAL MUSIC UK ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF VIRGIN EMI RECORDS

Universal Music UK's chairman and CEO David Joseph has announced the launch of Virgin EMI, an amalgamation of Universal Music subsidiaries Mercury Records and Virgin Records, one of the many labels acquired by Universal in its takeover of EMI last year. Ted Cockle, named a co-president of Island in 2008, will head Virgin EMI.

SUPREME COURT DENIES APPEAL OF WOMAN WHO OWES RIAA $222000

The Supreme Court has turned away an appeal from a Minnesota woman who has been ordered to pay record companies $222,000 for the unauthorized downloading of copyrighted music. The justices didn't comment Monday in letting stand the judgment against Jammie Thomas-Rassetof Brainerd, Minn. She claimed in court papers that the ordered payment was excessive. The case is Thomas-Rasset v. Capitol Records, 12-715.

DELOITTE LOOKING TO SELL HMV STORES BY 3/25

Administrators Deloitte are racing to secure the future of stricken high street music and entertainment chain before it is hit with a rent bill running into tens of millions of pounds, The Sunday Times reportED.  Bidders including include Asda and Hilco (which owns HMV Canada) have reportedly already put in offers to save the retailer, which went into administration in January. As many as 116 shops remain to be sold, with 1,000 jobs at stake. More than 100 stores have already been earmarked for closure by Deloitte. Earlier this year six stores were sold to Morrisons.

LIL WAYNE LEAVES HOSPITAL, MACK MAINE SAYS

Lil Wayne is out of the hospital, according to his Young Money associate Mack Maine. Mack Maine told his Twitter followers on Monday night that the multiplatinum rapper had left Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles, where he had been hospitalized since last week. Mack Maine tweeted his thanks to the hospital and said Lil Wayne had officially been released and was headed home. He added: "God is great."

EMINEM RETURNS TO HEADLINE BELGIUM'S PUKKELPOP FESTIVAL

Eminem hasn't yet revealed an exact release date for his upcoming eighth studio album -- The Recovery follow-up is expected to drop sometime after Memorial Day — but the Detroit rapper has detailed some of his tour plans for 2013. Marshall Mathers will return to the stage to headline Belgium's Pukkelpop festival on August 15, organizers revealed Monday. The three-day showcase runs from August 15 to 17 and also features   the xx, NIN, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, the Knife, Solange, Danny Brown, Fucked Up, Slayer and Baauer among others.

PledgeMusic is participating with an official launch in Canada where they've already seen some successful campaigns: "The Canadian artists that we have worked with have had an amazing performance against other territories so far with a 100% success rate. Their fans seem to be engaged and we are excited to be a part of a music scene that we have long admired from afar." Benji Rogers told Hypebot that the average Canadian fan spent $67 per transaction as opposed to $55 in the States.

RECORDING ACADEMY TO HONOR JENNIFER HUDSON AT GRAMMYS ON THE HILL 4/17

The Grammys on the Hill Awards will take place April 17 at the Hamilton in Washington, D.C.  and will recognize Jennifer Hudson with The Academy's Recording Artists' Coalition Award (named for The Academy's artists' rights program founded by Don Henley and Sheryl Crow). The awards will include a cocktail reception and dinner preceding the ceremony and will thank key legislators who help improve the environment for music makers. Proceeds will benefit the Grammy Foundation's Signature Schools, which provides support for underserved music programs throughout the country.
