NIELSEN STUDY: MUSIC INDUSTRY COULD ADD $450 MILLION TO $2.6 BILLION IN INCREMENTAL REVENUE WITH PREMIUM CONTENT

The music industry has lost billions of dollars in revenue over the last decade. Nielsen says the industry can use generated at least a half billion in incremental revenue by allowing fans to better connect with artists.

VEVO TV LAUNCHES

Today, Vevo is launching Vevo TV, a traditionally programmed, linear broadcast that harkens back to the era of appointment television. MSG SELLS ITS LIVE NATION STOCK

The Madison Square Garden Company today announced the sale of all of its approximately 3.9 million shares of Live Nation Entertainment stock, valued at approximately $44 million. The move is not unexpected, following the Feb. 22 resignation of MSG president/CEO James Dolan from the Live Nation board of directors.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE ‘RELEASE PARTY’ TV SHOW TO AIR ON CW, SPONSORED BY TARGET, IHEARTRADIO


The network announced Tuesday that it has scheduled a one-hour special coinciding with the release of Timberlake's third solo effort at 8 p.m. March 19, the same day The 20/20 Experience hits stores.  With one of the longest titles, "Target Presents the IHeartRadio Album Release Party With Justin Timberlake," the special will feature performances and interviews with Timberlake.

APPLE JOINS DIGITAL RESALE MOVEMENT

In January, Amazon was granted a patent on tech related to the resale of digital content and now Apple has filed their own version. Not only are they covering quite a bit of ground with their patents but ReDigi is in court defending its digital resale system while a recent case in Europe supports the idea. This growing momentum means that musicians have to be prepared for the possibility of another hit to music revenue streams. Apple Insider broke the news last week that Apple has filed a patent to facilitate resale of digital content.

DEEZER TURNS ON AFFILIATE DEALS, GAMING APIS, AND (AHEAD OF SPOTIFY) 3RD PARTY APPS ON MOBILE

Deezer has announced a series of new services based around its APIs to drive more users to its service, including: affiliate marketing program; more social and gaming integration; and the ability to port apps made for the Deezer App Studio into Deezer’s mobile apps for Android and iOS devices. This last point gives Deezer a leg up on Spotify, which has yet to incorporate third-party apps into its mobile platform. Deezer says it currently has 26 million customers, with some 3 million of them paying as of January 2013; Spotify now has 24 million subscribers, 6 million of them paying.

HUNDREDS OF TAYLOR SWIFT FAN LETTERS FOUND IN NASHVILLE DUMPSTER

Hundreds of unopened Taylor Swift letters addressed to the pop star were found in a Dumpster last weekend, a revelation that has Swift-ly ignited the fury of her devoted fans. Nashville resident Kylee Francescan was throwing out some old newspapers when she discovered the letters in a dumpster outside a local elementary school. ”I didn’t know if they were stolen [or] discarded, so I threw them in a box,” Francescan told Nashville’s News 2 Investigates. “And I’m like, ‘Somebody needs to let Taylor know.’”
