Carson Daly’s “Last Call” show will hold its annual showcase at SXSW, this year emphasizing rock bands that have not made their television debuts.
Angel Haze, Big Black Delta, Glossary, Grape St., Maximum Hedrum and The Coup will perform March 13 at Cedar Street Courtyard in Austin. A week-long spotlight on SXSW will begin March 19 on “Last Call with Carson Daly,” which airs on NBC 1:35 a.m.-2:05 a.m. Jake Bugg, Joey Bada$$, Angel Haze and Chloe Chaidez from the band Kitten will be among the guests.
“The object is to put together the most eclectic lineup possible,” Daly told Billboard. “Having national television debuts is important, whether it’s a band that’s been around for a minute or brand new like Angel Haze. They can say ‘I’ve been on NBC’ and use it as a calling card. New music and storytelling – that’s what we work on and something (music booker) David Powers and I speak about: Who are the people with a good story?”
Ford Fiesta is sponsoring the showcase. “Last Call” will also feature Ford Fiesta’s social media program, “Fiesta Movement: A Social Remix,” where a handpicked group of insiders will be introducing the 2014 Ford Fiesta through their photos and videos.
Daly says they continue to book acts for the interview segments, noting the Joey Bada$$ booking was the most recent one added. “Were not a traditional late night show,” Daly notes, saying they move quickly when the buzz around an act starts growing. “But it is nimble and modular. We’re like kids in a candy store at SXSW, but we have to be economical with our time and money.”
