SONY/ATV TOP PUBLISHER FOR 2012'S FOURTH QUARTER

In what likely will be a trend for the next few years, Sony/ATV is the No. 1­­­­-­ ranked music publisher, based on its market share of the top 100 songs as compiled by Nielsen BDS. Last June, a Sony Corp. of America-led consortium completed the acquisition of EMI Music Publishing and assigned the company to Sony/ATV for administration.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE'S ‘MIRRORS’ TOPS UK SINGLES CHART

SONY TO SELL STAKE IN MOBILE GAME COMPANY FOR $437 MILLION

The consumer electronics and entertainment giant continues to unload non-core assets as it strives to streamline its operations and bolster its finances. Sony will sell 17.72 million shares in online game and e-commerce portal DeNA to Nomura Securities, and book income of $437 million (40.9 billion yen) for the current financial quarter, the company said Monday. Sony has recently sold its New York headquarters, a major building in Tokyo and a stake in an internet medical services company as it restructures following four years of consecutive losses.

LABELS SETTLE COPYRIGHT LAWSUIT WITH CHINA’S SOHU

A China.com.cn report Sunday said Universal Music, Warner Music, Sony Music Entertainment Hong Kong, and Gold Typhoon Entertainment signed a settlement agreement with the two Beijing-based companies -- Internet company Sohu and its search engine, Sougou. The music labels agreed not to pursue the 54 million yuan (US$8.6 million) music piracy lawsuit, while Sougou said it would donate an undisclosed amount to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's (IFPI) anti-piracy fund.

TESCO TO LAUNCH DIGITAL MUSIC SERVICE BLINKERBOX

UK supermarket chain Tesco will launch specialist digital music and ebook services later this year under the Blinkbox brand in a bid to ramp up its entertainment offering.  The brand will introduce the new services to go alongside its Blinkbox online film store that it acquired a majority stake in i2011. The supermarket offering is being touted as a potential rival for the likes of Amazon and Apple. The new service will  be headed up by senior execs, Gavin Sathianathan – formerly Facebook’s head of retail EMEA, and Mark Bennett – formerly of EMI, Warner and Sainsbury’s digital entertainment respectively.

FORMER NO LIMIT RAPPER MR. MAGIC & WIFE KILLED IN CAR CRASH

Former No Limit rapper Mr. Magic was killed, along with his wife, in a car crash in Hattiesburg, MS on Friday (March 1). There are few details on the crash, but the couple’s 12-year-old daughter survived the accident which happened at night, according to Nola.com. Born, Awood Johnson, in New Orleans’ 9th Ward, Magic spent the initial years of his rap career on No Limit Records, dropping three albums under the label including his debut, Sky’s The Limit in 1998.
