SPOTIFY TO PAY RIGHTS HOLDERS $500 MILLION IN 2013, EK SAYS

Spotify chief executive Daniel Ek on Tuesday said his company expects to pay rights holders to the tune of half-a-billion dollars in 2013. Speaking at the Founders Forum in Los Angeles, Ek said Spotify is projected to pay artists, labels, publishers and other rights holders this year the equivalent to the total amount that the company had paid out since it launched in 2008.

BUSINESS MATTERS: DIGITAL REVENUES UP, BUT FRENCH RECORDED MUSIC MARKET DOWN 4% IN 2012

The digital-led growth seen in Sweden and Norway, driven by early and widespread adoption of subscription services, may look different in other countries. On the back of digital growth, France's total recorded music revenues were down just 4.4% in 2012, according to year-end figures by trade association SNEP. But France, the home market of subscription service Deezer, does not appear to have a subscription-led success story like Sweden or Norway.

DEEZER PARTNERS WITH SMART TVS

Deezer is partnering with LG, Samsung, and Toshiba to deliver its music-streaming service on the companies’ smart TVs. The service, which is now in more than 180 countries worldwide (but still not in the US), has about three million subscribers paying for access to its 20-million-track library.

BMG CHRYSALIS INKS JOINT PUB VENTURE WITH BELLA UNION

BMG Chrysalis U.S. has inked a publishing joint venture with Bella Union Songs, the publishing division of ex-Cocteau Twins member Simon Raymonde’s Bella Union Records. The U.K.-based label was founded in 1997 with a roster that now includes such critical darlings as  Fleet Foxes, Beach House, Father John Misty, The Walkmen, Explosions in the Sky and Flaming Lips, among others.

LIBERTY CONFIRMS VIRGIN MEDIA BID

John Malone’s Liberty Global has confirmed an agreed $23.3bn cash and stock bid for Virgin Media, the UK cable operator, offering $47.87 a share in a move that will upend competition in the UK pay television, broadband and telecoms market. With a successful entry into the UK taking Liberty Global’s reach to 25m customers, Malone would be the dominant player in the European television market with cable assets in Germany, Belgium, and other European countries. Liberty is SiriusXM’s majority shareholder.

YOUTUBE TO LAUNCH NEW COUNTRY CHANNEL

As it continues a bid to woo viewers from television by offering original content of its own, YouTube is launching a channel Wednesday dedicated to country music and its fans, with programming created and produced by Nashville artists and firms. YouTube has partnered with Los Angeles entertainment firm Greenlight Media & Marketing LLC to create the Country Now channel to produce at least eight shows, or about 20 hours of original programming, for the channel.

TWITTER GIVES VINE AN NC-17 RATING

After a dustup over pornography showing up on Vine, the new and much-talked-about Twitter-owned video-sharing app has added an age rating for possible adult content. The app for iPhone and iPod Touch, which lets anyone create and share six-second clips, quickly became a popular venue for pornography after its release last month. As first noted by The Verge, Twitter released a new version today that requires users to confirm that they are at least 17 years of age; the previous version described itself for users 12 and older.
