Byrds Boxed Up On 'There Is A Season'

Comments

Legendary rock act the Byrds will be back in the spotlight this fall thanks to the four-CD/one-DVD boxed set "There Is a Season," due Sept. 26 via Columbia/Legacy. The project was personally overseen by group members Chris Hillman and Roger McGuinn.

The first 50 of the 99 audio tracks feature the Byrds' original lineup of Jim (later Roger) McGuinn, David Crosby, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke. Beyond classics like "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season)," "Eight Miles High" and "So You Want To Be a Rock'n'Roll Star," the box sports five previously unreleased live tracks.

They are "He Was a Friend of Mine" taped in April 1967 for Swedish radio, "You All Look Alike" and "Nashville West" from a Feb. 28, 1970, show at Queens College and "Baby What You Want Me To Do" and "I Trust" from a Sept. 23, 1970 show at New York's Fillmore East. "There Is a Season" is rounded out by a 10-track DVD rounding up rare television performances from 1965-1967.

McGuinn penned the introduction to the liner notes, which also feature appreciations from Tom Petty and the Jayhawks' Gary Louris.

"Perhaps the most intriguing thing about the Byrds was how well they fit into the '60s, as well as how they helped shape it," Petty writes. "This was no one-and-a-half-hit pop group. These guys were Artists. They were going to push the envelope. The Beatles knew it and so did their fans. Without a single member with a rock background, they came from folk trios, bluegrass, Christy Minstrels and beatnik coffee houses. It was almost like a lab experiment, mixing the elements and seeing what came out."
