Prince

Prince, Dec. 31, 1987, Minneapolis (Paisley Park Studios)

Prince To ring in the 1988 New Year, Prince threw an exclusive benefit show at his recently opened Paisley Park Studios for the Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless. "There was a lot of alcohol and drug use," remembers Sue Watlov-Phillips, who at the time was the Coalition's board president. "It was just a very large and loud party. It was a slippery night and obvious to see people had had too much too drink because afterwards people were slipping and actually falling."

The formal evening, the first major event at the studio?s soundstage, raised $25,000 for the homeless. Prince and company tore through classics like "If I Was Your Girlfriend," "Let's Go Crazy," "When Doves Cry," "Purple Rain" and "1999," but for many, the highlight was a special guest performance on "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night" from Miles Davis, who had flown over from Paris for the occasion. The concert was never commercially released, but bootleg footage has long made the rounds in fan circles.

Prince and Davis had been friends since 1985, yet this was the only time the two of them shared a concert stage. The pair did collaborate on the track "Sticky Wicked," found on Chaka Khan's "CK" album, and Davis was known to perform Prince's "Movie Star" at his own shows.
