Say Anything Says It All On Third Album

Comments

by Lisa Marie Basile, N.Y.  |   January 21, 2009 12:05 EST

Say Anything will follow 2007's high-concept double album "In Defense of the Genre" with a new project this summer on J Records, frontman Max Bemis tells Billboard.com.

Bemis says the album will be self-titled because it functions as a statement revealing where the band is now. After his struggle with -- and triumph over -- bipolar disorder and a drug habit, he says he's been able to look at making music with a fresh perspective.

"I think what people like about Say Anything is going to come out even stronger on this record," he says, adding that the album will go in a more positive direction. "It's not like we're suddenly becoming another band. It's like we're embracing who we are to the fullest extent. That's why it's self-titled."

With Bemis describing the band's 2005 breakthrough "...Is a Real Boy" as a "drunk, pukey sex phase"-themed album and "In Defense" as an album that "reaps the benefits of years of self-abuse by being stuck in a terrible relationship phase," the self-titled album will be a declaration of the band's feelings on something more optimistic: true love.

"This is the first record that actual true love is explored on -- love for other people, love for the higher power, love for music and love for little things," Bemis says.

Meanwhile, Bemis and Say Anything drummer Coby Linder are about to release the debut album from Two Tongues, their side project with Saves The Day's Chris Conley and David Soloway. The self-titled effort arrives Feb. 3 on Vagrant.

Bemis says that between work on Say Anything and Two Tongues, fans can expect a Say Anything tour once their album is released later this year.
