Record Store Day: The 10 Coolest Events and Releases

by Monica Herrera, Mariel Concepcion and Keir Bristol, N.Y.  |   April 17, 2009 3:53 EDT
From an exclusive Queen EP and performance by Talib Kweli to Wilco’s advance of its new concert DVD, there will be plenty to celebrate during the second annual Record Store Day (April 18). Over 1,000 indie retail stores worldwide are playing host to the occasion, with hundreds of artists making appearances and offering exclusive product for music fans.

Among the event highlights is the on-site record store at Coachella (April 17-19), which will be managed by Phoenix-based indie retail chain Zia and feature in-store appearances by the music festival’s slate of performers (including TV on the Radio, Clipse, Peter, Bjorn & John).

Exclusive product releases include 7-inch singles by Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Slayer and and the much-anticipated advance of Wilco’s “Ashes of American Flags.” “Even if I wasn't in a band, I'd still support Record Store Day,” Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy recently told Billboard. “It's a great thing and I'm glad we could do something special with them for our DVD."

A complete guide to Record Store Day is available at the official website. Here are Billboard's picks for the coolest events and releases:
