Michael Jackson's catalog dominated the new U.K. bestsellers published yesterday (Sunday), with three albums in the top five and 13 singles in the top 40. He was robbed of a chart double by a late climb to the top of the singles survey by Euro-pop act Cascada, but Official Chart Company data estimates that Jackson's music sold some 600,000 units across the two charts in the week ending Saturday night.
Jackson had topped the singles chart until late in the sales week with "Man In The Mirror" (Epic/Sony Music Entertainment), but Cascada's "Evacuate The Dancefloor" (All Around The World/Universal Music TV) moved ahead of it for a No.1 debut, as "Mirror" finished with an 11-2 climb. It's Cascada's first U.K. No. 1 single and fifth top tenner.
The "King of Pop" made another posthumous return to the U.K. top ten as "Billie Jean" climbed 25-10, and was inside the top 20 with "Thriller" (up 23-12), "Smooth Criminal" (28-13) and "Beat It" (30-19). His eight other titles in the top 40 were "Black Or White," up 45-25, "Dirty Diana" (50-26), "They Don't Care About Us" (67-32), "Earth Song" (38-33), "The Way You Make Me Feel" (47-34), "You Are Not Alone" (44-35), "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" (48-38) and "Bad" (57-40). Jackson was further represented by another 14 titles in the 41-75 part of the published top 75, including four with the Jackson 5, one with the Jacksons and one with Janet Jackson.
Epic's "The Essential Michael Jackson," in turn, raced 20-1 to deprive British electro-pop duo La Roux from a No. 1 debut with their first, self-titled Polydor album. The duo of singer Elly Jackson and co-writer Ben Langmaid nevertheless made a strong start, with sales of 63,000 the best first-week total for a debut album this year. The previous best tallies were 46,000 for female British electronic string quartet Escala's self-titled album on Syco Music/Sony Music
Entertainment in late May, and 42,000 for Daniel Merriweather's "Love & War" (J/Sony Music Entertainment) last month.
Jackson's "Number Ones" compilation, which raced to the top last week, fell 1-3, as another retrospective, "King of Pop," improved 14-5. His classic studio albums "Thriller" and "Off The Wall" climbed 7-6 and 17-10 respectively, with the "Thriller 25" deluxe reissue up 45-18.
Former UB40 frontman Ali Campbell scored a No. 13 debut with his "Flying High" album (Jacaranda) and British trio Noisettes climbed back 24-19 with "Wild Young Hearts" (Vertigo/Universal).
New York rock outfit Dream Theater's "Black Clouds and Silver Linings" (Roadrunner) opened at No. 1 on Billboard's European Top 100 Albums. Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" (Interscope/Universal) scored a third non-consecutive week atop Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.
