Kings of Leon
Kings of Leon’s double triumph at the BRIT Awards last week delivered a big sales boost on the new U.K. charts Sunday (Feb. 22). The Hand Me Down/Sony BMG quartet returned to No. 1 with the album “Only By The Night” and, on the singles survey, jumped back 12-3 with “Use
Somebody” and 19-14 with “Sex On Fire.”
"Only By The Night" debuted at No. 1 in the U.K. last September and has never been out of the top ten since. KoL replaced Lily Allen’s “It’s Not Me, It’s You” (Regal/Parlophone/EMI), which fell to No. 2 after debuting at the top last week, but Allen scored a fourth week at No. 1 with the single “The Fear.”
Morrissey’s “Years of Refusal” (Decca/Universal) entered at No. 3, in contrast to the No. 1 debut of its 2006 predecessor “Ringleader of the Tormentors.” Duffy followed her triple victory at the BRITS by almost doubling her weekly sales with “Rockferry” (A&M/Universal), which raced 19-4, one week before its first anniversary on the chart. Elbow reaped the rewards of their best British group award, jumping 23-5 with “The Seldom Seen Kid” (Fiction/Polydor/Universal) in its 43rd week.
There was also a 33-8 climb for the Ting Tings’ “We Started Nothing” (Columbia/Sony BMG). Seasick Steve, who was nominated as best international male solo artist but lost out to Kanye West, nevertheless jumped 24-9 with “I Started Out With Nothin’ and I Still Got Most Of It Left.” The Pet Shop Boys, who won outstanding contribution to music at the ceremony, entered at No. 19 with “Popart - The Hits” (Parlophone/EMI).
As Allen continued to lead the singles chart, the Prodigy’s “Omen” (Takemetothehospital) improved 8-4, Shontelle’s “T-Shirt” (Universal) 10-6 and Pussycat Dolls’ “Whatcha Think About That” (Interscope/Universal) 15-10. Also performing well were Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” (Interscope/Universal), up 22-15 as her “Just Dance” held at No. 2; Miley Cyrus, up 44-16 with “Fly on the Wall” (Hollywood/EMI); and T.I. featuring Justin Timberlake, up 30-17
with “Dead & Gone” (Atlantic/Warner Music).
There was also a U.K. singles chart debut for Taylor Swift, new at No. 22 with “Love Story” (Mercury/Universal). But her Mercury labelmates U2 had a somewhat disappointing No. 12 entry with “Get On Your Boots,” despite the band’s prominent opening performance of the track at the BRIT Awards.
Bruce Springsteen matched the achievement of his last album “Magic” in 2007 by starting a third week atop Billboard’s European Top 100 Albums chart with “Working On A Dream” (Columbia/Sony BMG). James Morrison’s “Broken Strings” (Polydor), featuring Nelly Furtado, is in a second week at No. 1 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.
