The new U.K. sales charts welcomed two new champions yesterday (Sunday), as ingenue pop talent Pixie Lott burts onto the singles survey at No. 1 with "Mama Do" (Mercury/Universal) and electro-rock favorites Kasabian scored their second consecutive album chart-topper with "West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum" (Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment).
Kasabian's new album success follows a similar No. 1 debut for their previous release, "Empire," in 2006. Their self-titled debut set opened at No. 4 in 2004. "West Ryder" pushed Paolo Nutini's chart-topping entry of last week, "Sunny Side Up," down to No. 2, while Black Eyed Peas' "The End" (Interscope/Universal) came in at No. 3. Emerging British electropop artist Little Boots scored a No. 5 debut with her first album, "Hands" (Atlantic/Warner Music).
A busy top ten for new entries also saw a No. 7 start for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's "Greatest Hits," TV-advertised by Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment ahead of his upcoming British dates. Long-running modern rock trio Placebo's sixth studio album "Battle For The Sun" (Dreambrother) came in at No. 8.
18-year-old Lott, born Victoria Lott in Kent, is being described by the Official Charts Company as the first British female artist ever to debut at the top of the U.K. singles chart who has not emerged from a reality TV/talent series background. "Mama Do" is the first single from Lott's debut album "Turn It Up," due in September.
The new singles survey also revealed a 4-3 climb for Agnes' "Release Me," a fourth week at No. 5 for Daniel Merriweather's "Red" (J/Sony Music Entertainment) and a No. 7 debut for "When Love Takes Over" (Positiva/EMI) by David Guetta featuring Kelly Rowland. Lady GaGa's "Paparazzi" (Interscope/Universal) climbed 43-13.
But Europe-wide, Lady GaGa's 15-week reign on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles with "Poker Face" was finally ended by labelmates the Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow." Green Day is in a third week atop European Top 100 Albums chart with "21st Century Breakdown" (Reprise/Warner Music).
