White Lies
White Lies, one of the most hotly tipped new British bands of 2009, confirmed that potential with a No. 1 debut for their first album, "To Lose My Life" (Fiction/Polydor) on the new U.K. album chart. Lady GaGa's "Just Dance" (Interscope/Universal) started a third week atop the singles survey.
White Lies was known as Fear Of Flying until about a year ago. The band has released three singles so far under its current name, of which the most successful, also titled "To Lose My Life," edges 35-34 this week. Its instant album chart success came as the Script's self-titled Phonogenic/Sony BMG debut slipped 1-3, while Kings Of Leon's "Only By the Night" (Hand Me Down/Sony BMG) held at No. 2.
This week's album chart features the first top 10 appearances for Jason Mraz, up 11-8 with "We Sing We Dance We Steal Things" (Atlantic/Warner Music), and the Saturdays, the female U.K. pop band whose debut set "Chasing Lights" (Fascination/Polydor) jumped 14-9. MGMT's "Oracular Spectacular" (Columbia), which last week fell 8-17, climbed back to No. 10.
Other highlights of the new album chart included a 16-13 climb for veteran British middle-of-the-road singer Roger Whittaker with "The Golden Age of Roger Whittaker -- 50 Years of Classics" (UMTV/Universal). Seasick Steve jumped back 48-17 with "I Started Out With Nothin' and I Still Got Most of It Left" (Warner Bros.).
Lady GaGa's "Just Dance" stayed ahead of Kid Cudi vs. Crookers' "Day 'N' Night" (Data), which held at No. 2 as east London "grime" star Tinchy Stryder scored a first big hit, soaring 39-3 with "Take Me Back" (4th & Broadway/Universal). English pop vocalist Alesha Dixon rose 23-13 with "Breathe Slow" (Asylum/Warner Music).
On Billboard's pan-European sales charts, Pink's "Funhouse" (LaFace/Sony BMG) reached the Top 100 Albums summit for the first time in its tenth week, while Katy Perry is in a third week atop Eurochart Hot 100 Singles with "Hot N Cold" (Virgin/EMI).
