Possibly portending a win later in the night for album of the year, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss took home two awards during the pre-telecast: best contemporary folk/Americana album for "Raising Sand" and country collaboration with vocals for album track "Killing the Blues."

Columbia Records head Rick Rubin won producer of the year for his work with Metallica ("Death Magnetic"), Neil Diamond ("Home Before Dark"), Weezer ("The Red Album") and others.

Lil Wayne won for best rap solo performance for "A Milli," and his "Lollipop" won best rap song. "Swagga Like Us," by Jay-Z and T.I. featuring Kanye West and Lil Wayne, won best rap performance by a duo or group. Best rap/sung collaboration went to U.K. newcomer Estelle and Kanye West for "American Boy."

R&B legend Al Green, who had previously won Grammys in categories other than R&B, took home awards for best R&B performance by a duo or group with vocals and best traditional R&B vocal performance.

Elsewhere in the R&B categories, Alicia Keys scored for best female vocal performance for "Superwoman," while Ne-Yo won for male vocal performance for "Miss Independent." That track also won best R&B song for Ne-Yo and co-writers Mikkel Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen of Stargate. Best contemporary R&B album went to Mary J. Blige for "Growing Pains" and breakout artist Chrisette Michele won for best urban/alternative performance for "Be OK" featuring will.i.am.

Carrie Underwood won best female country vocal performance for "Last Name," and Brad Paisley won for best male country performance for "Letter To Me." Best country song went to Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles for her group's "Stay," and George Strait's "Troubadour" won for best country album.

John Mayer's "Gravity" won best solo rock vocal performance, while Kings of Leon's breakthrough modern rock hit "Sex on Fire" earned best rock performance by a duo or group with vocals.
