Black Eyed Peas Poised For No. 1 On Billboard 200

by Keith Caulfield, L.A.  |   June 11, 2009 6:30 EDT
The Black Eyed Peas are aiming to go "Boom" with its first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart next week as its new set, "The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies)," is poised to open in the top slot. Industry sources suggest that the will.i.am/Interscope set may sell upwards of 200,000-225,000 in its first week.

The quartet's last album, 2005's "Monkey Business," started at No. 2 with 291,000 and has gone on to sell 4.2 million copies in the U.S. according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"The E.N.D." was preceded by its first single, "Boom Boom Pow," which is currently in its 10th week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has blown through 2.6 million downloads. That makes its the third biggest selling song of the year, behind Flo Rida's "Right Round" (3.4 million) and Lady GaGa's "Poker Face" (3.1 million).

"The E.N.D." also naturally is at No. 1 on Nielsen SoundScan's Building Chart that was released on June 10, which reflected unweighted sales through the close of business on Tuesday, June 9. Billboard estimates the seven merchants who report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building chart -- Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, iTunes, Starbucks, Borders, Target and Anderson Merchandisers -- comprise about 60% of all U.S. album sales.

Dave Matthews Band's "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King" (Bama Rags/RCA), which bowed atop the Billboard 200 chart this week with 424,000, looks like it'll slip to the No. 2 slot next week. Meanwhile, other new releases aiming for high debuts include Pleasure P's "Introduction of Marcus Cooper" (Atlantic), Mos Def's "Ecstatic" (Downtown) and Aventura's "Last" (Premium Latin).

Nielsen SoundScan's sales tracking week, as reflected in the official Billboard 200 chart, runs from Monday through Sunday of each week. The newest Billboard 200 chart, released yesterday (June 10) -- where Dave Matthews Band's "Big Whiskey" debuted at No. 1 with 424,000 -- reflected the week that ended on Sunday, June 7.
