'Shout' It Out: Isley Bros. Return To No. 1

Comments

The Isley Brothers' "Body Kiss" gives the pair its first No. 1 on The Billboard 200 in nearly 30 years. The DreamWorks set sold slightly more than 150,000 copies in the U.S. during its first week at retail, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's the Isley's first No. 1 on the main album chart album since 1975's "The Heat Is On" (T-Neck).

Forever associated with their late-1950s hit "Shout," the veteran R&B act recaptured a mainstream audience with its 2001 album "Eternal." Featuring contributions from R. Kelly and Jill Scott, that set peaked at No. 3 on The Billboard 200, and has sold more than 1.2 million copies. The new album's first single, "What Would You Do?," is a top-20 hit on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks tally.

"Body Kiss" leads three debuts into the top-10 of The Billboard 200. The new arrivals, coupled with increased retail traffic linked to Mother's Day, gave the industry a much-needed sales boost. Six of the top-10 albums on The Billboard 200 saw sales topping 100,000 units, while only two releases notched six-digit sales in the previous week.

Norah Jones' Blue Note/Capitol debut "Come Away With Me" was a popular gift for mom. Sales of the Grammy-winning album jumped nearly 50% to 139,000 units, spurring a 5-2 boost on the chart.

Singer/songwriter Jack Johnson has a mighty impressive bow with his sophomore Universal effort "On and On." The album lands at No. 3 on sales of 132,000 copies, far and away the artist's best week on the tally. While his 2001 debut, "Brushfire Fairytales," only reached as high as No. 31, favorable reviews and a co-headlining tour with Ben Harper helped it rack up sales of more than 1.1 million copies.

"The Very Best of Cher" (Geffen/MCA/Warner Bros.) was also a hit with Mother's Day shoppers. Sales were up 24% to 121,000 copies, but the top-3 action holds the hits package steady at No. 4.

Sales of 50 Cent's "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" (Shady/Interscope) fell 6% to 120,000 copies, and the album falls 1-5 on the chart. Evanescence's "Fallen" (Wind-Up) maintains its No. 6 position after moving 102,000 units, a nearly 10% sales increase from the previous week. Sales of Celine Dion's "One Heart" (Epic) were up 47% to 96,000 copies, and the set blasts 13-7.

The Maverick/Warner Bros. soundtrack to "Matrix Reloaded" enters The Billboard 200 at No. 8. Buoyed by selections from Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, P.O.D., and the Deftones, the set sold 94,000 units in its first week. The soundtrack to the first installment of the mind bending sci-fi trilogy has sold 1.5 million copies to date.

Kelly Clarkson's RCA debut "Thankful" slides 3-9 in its fourth week on the chart. Sales slipped 7% to 93,000 units. The Walt Disney Records soundtrack to "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" falls one to round out the top-10 with sales of 92,900 copies, a 30% gain over the previous week.

Among other notable entries on The Billboard 200 is "The War on Errorism," the latest from pop-punk brats NOFX. The Fat Wreck Chords set arrives at No. 44, besting the band's last album of new material, 2000's "Pump Up the Valuum," which entered at No. 61.

Other new arrivals on the tally include the multi-artist soundtrack to the NBC series "American Dreams" (Hip-O) at No. 48, and U.K. modern rock act Blur's "Think Tank" (Virgin) at No. 56.
