Mastodon Shoots For The 'Skye'

Comments

Metal combo Mastodon has wrapped its next album, "Crack the Skye," which is due early next year via Warner Bros. As previously reported, the set was recorded with producer Brendan O'Brien, who was introduced to Mastodon by Bruce Springsteen drummer Max Weinberg.

The album includes seven songs, one of which ("The Czar") is split into four movements. It opens with "Oblivion," which drummer Brann Dailor described to Billboard last summer as "real moody," and wraps with the 15-minute jam "The Last Baron"

"Everything sounds real creepy and spaced out and different," Dailor said. Fans can expect the same complex packaging as with prior releases such as "Leviathan" and "Blood Mountain," as well as multiple formats.

"Crack the Skye" follows 2006's "Blood Mountain," which has sold a career-best 141,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Mastodon is on tour in Europe through Dec. 7. The band is already booked to open for Metallica during a six-week European tour in summer 2009.

Here is the track list for "Crack the Skye":

"Oblivion"
"Divinations"
"Quintessence"
"The Czar"
(I) Usurper
(II) Escape
(III) Martyr
(IV) Spiral
"Ghost of Karelia"
"Crack The Skye"
"The Last Baron"
