Unreleased Cuts Bolster Orbison Boxed Set

Comments

Twelve previously unreleased songs highlight a four-disc Roy Orbison boxed set due Sept. 23 via Monument/Orbison Records/Legacy Recordings. "The Soul of Rock and Roll" will encompass 107 tracks, including a version of "It's Over," from Orbison's final concert before his 1988 death.

The box begins with a previously unreleased take on "Ooby Dooby" by Orbison's group the Teen Kings; the first disc also includes previously unreleased 1958 demos for "Claudette," "Night Owl" and "Love Struck" and a solo guitar and vocal medley featuring "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You," "I Was The One," "That's All Right," "Mary Lou" and "You're My Baby."

Orbison's Monument recordings from the 1960s make up disc two, including classics like "Blue Bayou," "Only the Lonely" and "Oh, Pretty Woman." The third disc features live tracks from this period, as well as a demo of a late '60s track titled "Precious" and Orbison's Grammy-winning duet with Emmylou Harris, "That Lovin' You Feelin' Again."

The artist's later years are chronicled on disc four, including hits like "You Got It" and the "Blue Velvet" version of "In Dreams," plus highlights from the TV special "A Black and White Night Live," with guest turns by Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello.

Orbison's widow Barbara and son Roy Kelton Orbison Jr. executive produced "Soul of Rock and Roll." Springsteen, Costello, Neil Diamond, Tom Waits, Dolly Parton, Tom Petty and Bonnie Raitt are among the artists contributing testimonials to the liner notes.
