Thicke Says World Needs 'Something Else'

Comments

Hoping to repeat the success of 2006's "The Evolution of Robin Thicke," the R&B singer/songwriter will release his third album, "Something Else," on Sept. 9 via Star Trak/Interscope. The album's first single, "Magic," is currently No. 32 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

"Something Else" was produced entirely by Thicke and longtime collaborator Pro-Jay. And, unlike "Evolution," it features no guest appearances. The album, as Thicke describes it, is a cross between "classic Philly, Motown and '70s black disco meets the creativity of the Beatles and Bob Dylan."

"I felt like a lot of stuff out there sounded the same. Plus, there are a lot of things going on in the world with the recession and the war. It made me feel like everybody really just needed something new, something else," Thicke tells Billboard.com. "It's time for a change and there is hope for everyone."

Aside from "Magic," which is currently appearing in a European TV commercial for Samsung mobile phones, other songs on the set include the step track "Side Step," and the hopeful "Dream World," where Thicke croons, "idealistic world where energy falls down from the sky / and you can drive any car and drink your wine / and I could walk down the streets with my wife / and no one will look at her twice." Both songs are in contention to be the second single.

In addition, Thicke has been busy with some movie scoring, writing a novel and a screenplay, and is just wrapping up his first poetry book. As far as when any of these projects will see the light of day, Thicke says "they'll end up there. I have to enjoy and feel like I made something that deserves to be noticed. Otherwise, I don't rush my products for accolades."

"The Evolution Of Robin Thicke" has sold 1.5 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album spawned the hit "Lost Without You" which peaked at No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.
