Madonna Fetes 'Hard Candy' With Free NYC Show

Comments

Madonna celebrated the release of her album "Hard Candy" by performing a free show at New York's Roseland Ballroom on Wednesday night (April 30). Coming just one day after the album's release, Madonna's 30-minute set featured a duet with Justin Timberlake, a mix of new and older tracks, a massive stage set, throngs of backup dancers, and, at one point, a laser light show.

The crowd of 2,200 was certainly dedicated ? some concertgoers had been
waiting in various lines for 60 hours in order to snag a wristband to get into the show.

Madonna kicked off her set with "Hard Candy" tracks "Candy Shop" and "Miles Away." Next, Justin Timberlake, who is featured on her single "4 Minutes," joined her onstage to perform it. The song is currently No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

After playing the opening riff to the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" and bantering to the audience, Madonna launched into a hard-rocking version of "Hung Up" and a new dance tune called "Give It to Me" before closed the show with "Music," which reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 2000.

Event sponsor Verizon provided a live simulcast of the show's first four songs to subscribers worldwide. Verizon reps on the fully equipped studio bus outside the venue hinted that the company was working on future artist collaborations.

Madonna's Roseland concert came on the same day that first day sales of "Hard Candy" measured by Nielsen SoundScan's Building Chart showed the album was on track to debut at No. 1 on next week's Billboard 200 album chart.
