The King Is Dead

Comments

The Queen of Pop has dethroned the King of Rock'n'Roll. After racing 68-3 earlier this month, Madonna's "4 Minutes" featuring Justin Timberlake has given the singer her 37th top 10 hit -- the most of any artist in the rock era. Until now, she and Elvis Presley were tied with 36 apiece.

The Timbaland-produced single introducers her 11th studio album, "Hard Candy," due this week via Warner Bros. Top 40's initial embrace of the track must be music to Madonna's ears, after the chilly response the singles from her last album, "Confessions on a Dance Floor," received in the United States.

That set's leadoff single, "Hung Up," stalled at No. 17 after five weeks on the CHR/Top 40 chart. On the Billboard Hot 100, it climbed to No. 7 thanks to strong digital sales. Says Michael Yo, music director of top 40 WHYI (Y100) Miami, "You work with Justin Timberlake, the biggest artist out right now, and then you work with Timbaland, the best producer out right now, how can you make a bad song? It's a combination you can't go wrong with."

"A couple of times I pushed her in a direction where it took a minute before we saw eye to eye," Timberlake told Hollywood Daily People. "Her approach was, 'Well, I just haven't done that' and I was like, 'Yeah, that's why you should do it'."
