Remy Ma Sentencing Postponed Until Next Month

Comments

Rapper Remy Ma's planned sentencing tomorrow (April 23) for shooting an acquaintance has been postponed until May 13. Her lawyer, Ivan Fisher, tells Billboard.com he "needs more time to prepare a sentencing submission."

The artist, whose real name is Remy Smith, was convicted March 27 of assault, weapons possession and attempted coercion for shooting Makeda Barnes-Joseph in the abdomen. Smith claimed Barnes-Joseph had stolen $3,000 from her purse.

The 26-year-old performer is being held without bail at Rikers Island until her sentencing. She faces the possibility of up to 25 years in prison. And while rumors have been flying that Remy Ma will likely serve only 3-5 years, Fisher would not confirm that time frame.

"That has no resemblance to reality whatsoever," says Fisher. "I won't presume to know what the judge has in mind or what she will have in mind after our presentation. It is a sentencing range between 5-25 years."

However, Fisher was sure that the rapper will remain in custody until May 13, unlike rapper T.I., who was sentenced to complete 1000 of 1500 hours of community service before serving one year in prison for federal weapons charges.

"No, that's not going to happen unfortunately," says Fisher of the possibility of staggered sentencing.
