Rapper Plies has been named in a lawsuit alleging negligence on his part, stemming from a 2006 shooting at a Gainesville, Fla., nightclub.
Christopher Chestnut, a Gainesville attorney, announced the pending case had been filed at the Alachua County civil courthouse yesterday (April 8).
The lawsuit names Plies, born Algernod Lanier Washington, Slip-N-Slide Records, the 238 West nightclub, and others affiliated with the July 2006 concert or the club as defendants, according to the Gainesville Sun.
On July 2, 2006, Gainesville Police reported that members of Plies' entourage pulled out guns and fired during one of his shows. Police arrested four people, including the rapper. According to Plies' attorney Robert Rush, the MC later pled no contest to a misdemeanor charge of possession of a concealed weapon.
Chestnut said the case, filed on the behalf of five Gainesville residents injured at the concert, is seeking $10 million in damages.
Rush said he had not seen the lawsuit but stated that the plaintiffs are suing the wrong person. According to Rush, Plies does not have legal liability nor is it Plies' responsibility to provide security for concert attendees.
A representative for Plies was unavailable for comment at deadline.
