The Hold Steady, Regina Spektor, Nick Lowe and Ingrid Michaelson are among the artists set to perform during the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, Billboard.com can reveal. Sia, Joseph Arthur, Chris Thile and Rachael Yamagata are also scheduled to appear.
For the last several years, music has played a prominent role in the event, allowing for artists to perform in front of filmmakers and licensing companies. This exposure is unique, in that at other festivals like South by Southwest and Sundance, the film and music programs are largely separated.
"I think Tribeca is a genuine friend of new music, so they decide to set aside some time and resources to present it," Alexandra Patsavas of Chop Shop Music Supervision tells Billboard.com.
Patsavas, whose company has worked closely in selecting music for TV shows such as "The O.C." and "Gossip Girl," was asked to curate this year's "Breaking the Band" event on May 2 at New York's Webster Hall. The show features the Hold Steady, The Virgins, and Republic Tigers. Patsavas curated the event in 2006, with a lineup boasting Ben Gibbard, Nada Surf, Mates Of State and Ted Leo.
"It's about getting bands that I consider very license-friendly in front of filmmakers," she says of her selections. "I also wanted to focus on great New York music as well."
Through a donation from Target, unsigned act Bad Vein will be presented at "Breaking the Band" with the "Target Music Maker Award," a cash donation of $10,000 to help launch their career.
ASCAP will also continue its long-standing presence at Tribeca, hosting lounge sessions at the Canal Room. Lowe kicks off the series on April 29, followed through May 2 by Spektor, Thile, Michaelson, Sia, Arthur, Sondre Lerche and Augustana.
Music-related films will have a heavy presence this year. Among them are "90 Millas El Documental," which examines the making of Gloria Estefan's latest album "90 Millas," and "Lou Reed's Berlin," a live performance Reed recorded in 2006 at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn.
Other films include "Playing for Change: Peace Through Music," where street performer culture is examined across four continents, and "Celia the Queen," about the life of Cuban salsa queen Celia Cruz.
Tickets for "Breaking the Band" go on sale April 12 at the Tribeca Film Festival Box Office. The ASCAP Lounge is limited to festival badge-holders.
