Alan Jackson Bests Janet To Top Billboard 200

Comments

Country king Alan Jackson scores his fourth No. 1 on The Billboard 200 with his new set "Good Time." The Arista Nashville set sold 119,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. His last studio set, 2006's Alison Krauss-produced "Like Red on a Rose," started with 149,000 at No. 4. The new album's lead single, "Small Town Southern Man," continues to rise on Hot Country Songs, currently sitting at No. 2.

Despite a 29% sales decline, Jack Johnson's set "Sleep Through the Static" (Brushfire) climbs 3-2 on the big chart with 65,000. Janet Jackson's "Discipline" (Island Def Jam), last week's Billboard 200 topper, falls 1-3 with 57,000, a 68% hit.

Flogging Molly scores its highest charting album and its best sales week ever as "Float" (SideOneDummy) starts at No. 4 with 48,000. The rock band's last album, "Whiskey on a Sunday," debuted and peaked at No. 67 in 2006 with 14,000. The group's previous high-water mark was set when "Within a Mile of Home" landed at No. 20 in 2004 with 38,000.

The Black Crowes have their highest charting album since 1992 as "Warpaint" debuts at No. 5 with 46,000. The Silver Arrow album is the veteran act's first studio full-length in seven years -- the last was "Lions," which started with 53,000 at No. 20. In 1992, "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion" opened at No. 1.

"4th World War," the first half of Erykah Badu's double album series "New Amerykah," descends 2-6 with 41,000 (-67%). With a 3% sales bump, Sara Bareilles' Epic album "Little Voice" climbs 9-7 with 39,000. Alicia Keys' "As I Am" (J) falls 5-8 with 38,000 (-33%) while Taylor Swift's self-titled Big Machine debut re-enters the top tier 12-9 with 32,000 (+1%). Amy Winehouse's Universal Republic set "Back to Black" sits tight at No. 10 for a second week with 31,000, a 16% drop.

Michael McDonald's Universal Motown covers album "Soul Speak" enters the chart at No. 12 with 28,000 copies; his last album of new material, "Motown Two," entered at No. 9 in 2004 with 70,000. Another artist that got his start on the tally in the 1970s is Jackson Browne, whose "Solo Acoustic Vol. 2" (Inside Recordings) moved 20,000 units for a No. 24 start. That beats the start of 2005's "Solo Acoustic Vol. 1," which began at No. 55 with 19,000.

No other sets start inside the top 50, though Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks' "Real Emotional Trash" (Matador, No. 10, 10,000), Los Tigres Del Norte's "Raices" (Fonovisa, No. 68, 10,000), Cascada's "Perfect Day" (Robbins, No. 70, 10,000) and Ashton Shepherd's "Sounds So Good" (MCA Nashville, No. 90, 8,000) all bow within the top 100.

Sales this week are down 3.5% from last week at 7.68 million units and down 11.3% from the same week last year.
