My Morning Jacket Rocks Austin With New Songs

Comments

Although it wasn't an official South by Southwest show, My Morning Jacket lit up the crowd at Austin's the Parish last night (March 11) during a private party for the Independent Film Channel, performing more than a half-dozen songs from its upcoming album, "Evil Urges."

In addition to the ultra-funky title track, the group also unveiled the robotic electro jam "Highly Suspicious," the sprawling "Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Part 2," the classic rocker "Aluminum Park" and the deeply soulful "Thank You Too," among others.

MMJ also tore through back catalog highlights throughout the 20-song set, with frontman Jim James and Carl Broemel thrashing around the tiny stage for frequent two-guitar jams. Other highlights included "Gideon" and "Off the Record" from 2005's "Z" and oldies such as "The Way That He Sings" and "Golden."

The band is officially in town to perform Thursday at the Austin Music Hall; James will also play a solo show Saturday at the city's St. David's Church. "Evil Urges" arrives June 10 via ATO.

Earlier in the evening, Yo La Tengo kicked off the bash with a 45-minute set. The poppy "Mr. Tough" contrasted sharply with 10-minute detours like "Pass the Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind," the latter setting the tone for what MMJ would conjure later.
