Composer Karlheinz Stockhausen Dies At 79

Comments

Influential German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen died Wednesday in Kurten, Germany, at the age of 79, according to a statement from his foundation. A cause of death was not listed.

Stockhausen rose to fame with avant-garde, electronic compositions in the 1960s, drawing acclaim from such pop artists as Paul McCartney. His image appears on the album cover to the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album.

Stockhausen went on to work in large-scale music theater projects. Next year, Dresden's European Centre for the Arts Hellerau will perform his epic "Licht" cycle, which runs 29 hours in length. The piece was started in 1977 and not completed until 2002, but five of its seven components have been staged separately.
