Loudon Wainwright III and Joe Henry's collaboration for the "Knocked Up" film and "Strange Weirdos" album has given birth to another joint project.
Wainwright tells Billboard.com that he and Henry have completed a second album together called "Recovery," which recasts songs from Wainwright's first three albums -- 1970's "Loudon Wainwright III," 1971's "Album II" and 1972's "Album III" -- in full-band arrangements using the players who worked on "Strange Weirdos" and Henry's latest release, "Civilian."
"These songs are all over 35 years old -- some of which I had to re-learn again," Wainwright says. "They were voice-and-guitar records before. So this is kind of a reclaiming of these old songs of mine but with this unit of players that I've really loved to work with. It's pretty cool."
Among the songs on the album will be "Movies Are a Mother to Me," "School Days," "Drinking Song" and "Be Careful, There's a Baby in the House." Wainwright says the group -- keyboardist Patrick Warren, bassist David Pitch, guitarist Greg Leisz and drummer Jay Bellerose, plus Bill Frisell on several tracks -- stayed faithful to the original arrangements, though he notes that "my voice has changed radically, so some of them may sound a little different to people. But I wouldn't say we deconstructed anything, particularly. We just re-did 'em, but with these great players."
Wainwright says he and Henry are talking with some labels about releasing "Recovery" in 2008, though no firm details have been determined. Wainwright is currently touring in support of "Strange Weirdos."
