Indie rock outfit Tapes N' Tapes has wrapped work on its sophomore album, due in late spring via XL Recordings. The Minneapolis-based group headed to upstate New York to record with producer David Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Weezer) at Tarbox Road Studios.
"It was nice to be able to work with someone who has a real studio," lead singer/guitarist Josh Grier tells Billboard.com. "Having a budget was awesome. It allowed us to have a real studio and get the sounds we wanted. We wanted to make a rock record, but there weren't any over-indulgences. There's no orchestral arrangements or anything."
"One thing we wanted to do this time was get real drum sounds," he continues. "Last time it was recorded in a place that had six-feet ceilings."
The new batch of material was written after an extensive bout of touring, starting this past January. In the end, the band came away with 15 tracks, but is still trying to figure out which ones will make the final cut. "Our idea on the last record was to get an accurate representation of the band; on this record, we wanted to sound like the four of us playing the songs," Grier says.
Tapes N' Tapes has one show slated for Nov. 30 at Minneapolis's Triple Rock Social Club, which will feature several of the new songs.
