Radiohead Catalog Enjoying Post-'Rainbows' Boost

Comments

A ComScore study unveiled yesterday (Nov. 6) contends that most consumers elected to pay nothing to download Radiohead's "In Rainbows." But that doesn't mean consumers have given up buying the band's music entirely.

According to Nielsen SoundScan, Radiohead's seven previous albums -- "Pablo Honey," "The Bends," "OK Computer," "Kid A," "Amnesiac," "I Might Be Wrong" and "Hail to the Thief" -- collectively sold a total of 35.8% more copies in the four weeks following the Sept. 30 announcement of "In Rainbows" compared to the four preceding weeks.

When the news of the new album hit, Radiohead jumped from No. 15 to No. 3 on Billboard's Buzz 100 chart, which measures blog traffic, and has enjoyed placement in the top five of that tally ever since

The first catalog sales gains also showed up immediately following the announcement, with a 16% jump the week ending Oct. 7. Older albums, led by "OK Computer," leapt a further 21% when "In Rainbows" actually became available during the week ending Oct. 14.
