Annuals Busy With Debut For Sony Imprint

Comments

In between large bouts of touring, indie rock act Annuals has been able to carve out about a month's worth of studio time for the follow-up to its 2006 debut, "Be He Me."

Frontman Adam Baker says the group has about 25 tunes to choose from, with plans to whittle down to "sixteen or seventeen." The group has been busy writing new material over the last year, but Baker also has numerous songs from around the time "Be He Me" was recorded.

"That's one of the biggest problems," Baker tells Billboard.com. "There are some [songs] that I'm definitely over, but I know will never get out if we don't include them this time."

"Most everything we have is new though, and was written in the last year. We've been a bit maniacal about it. We'll record something, then go on tour, then come back and cut the fat out," Baker says of the new tunes.

As with many artists that break out, Annuals have found themselves with a higher recording budget, of which Baker is excited to take advantage. "We intend to hire a high school or college orchestra to take into the studio. And hopefully we'll get into some different studios around the country," he says.

After releasing its first record on indie label Ace Fu, the band recently signed with the new Sony imprint Canvasback. "There were other offers out there, but they didn't seem as motivated to work hard for us," Baker says. "[Canvasback] is a nice, small subsidiary, and appropriate for our career."
