Kid Rock Pulls Ahead In Race For Billboard 200

Comments

Kid Rock looks primed to debut at No. 1 next week on The Billboard 200 with "Rock'n'Roll Jesus" (Atlantic). Unweighted opening-day sales from eight leading accounts posted today on Nielsen SoundScan's Building Charts put the Oct. 9 release at 53,000 copies.

This would be the first chart-topper of Rock's career. So far, the album is well ahead of Bruce Springsteen's "Magic," which debuted today at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 with 335,000 sold in its opening frame. Second-week sales through close of Tuesday for Springsteen's set stood at 31,000.

Of Rock's five earlier appearances on the big chart, his best rank belonged to sophomore album "The History of Rock," which bowed at No. 2 in 2000. His last outing, "'Live' Trucker," marked the first time he failed to reach the top 10, peaking at No. 12 in 2006.

Four other Oct. 9 releases could debut in next week's top 10. LeAnn Rimes' "Family" (Curb) sold 18,000 in its first day at the Building panel, while Jennifer Lopez's "Brave" (Epic) shifted a nearly identical but slightly less total. Alter Bridge's "Blackbird" (Universal) moved 17,000, followed by Sara Evans' "Greatest Hits" (RCA) with 15,000.

Billboard estimates the eight accounts that report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building Charts account for 79% of U.S. album sales. The panel includes the two racks that service Wal-Mart, Anderson Merchandisers and Handleman Co., plus Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Circuit City, Borders, iTunes and Target.
