HMV Errs On Radiohead Release Date, Label

Comments

Radiohead's spokesperson has denied that the band's new album, "In Rainbows," will get a standard physical release Dec. 3 through EMI, after market-leading U.K. retailer HMV started taking pre-orders for the CD via its online store.

Hmv.co.uk lists "In Rainbows" for pre-order sale at £11.99 ($24.45) and gives a release date of Dec. 3. The label is listed as Parlophone, the EMI imprint on which Radiohead released all its previous albums. The band fulfilled its EMI contract in 2005.

Radiohead's spokesperson says the band has not re-signed to Parlophone, EMI or any other label for "In Rainbows," adding, "They have not signed a deal and it will not be released then. They are talking to labels at the moment."

An HMV spokesperson said the premature release date and label detail was attributable to an "over-enthusiastic member of staff" and said the listing will be modified as soon as possible, with the date of issue and label changed to "TBC."

The spokesperson said that the listing was intended to register people's interest in purchasing the CD when it became available, rather than to take pre-orders. Although unable to confirm, he added that it was unlikely anyone had been charged when trying to pre-order the CD, saying that their details will simply be held and they will be notified that pre-ordering can begin when a release date is confirmed.

Until then, the album is being self-released Oct. 10 as a download on Radiohead.com, with fans asked to pay any amount they wish on top of a 45 pence (91 cents) administration charge. It is also available as a £40 ($81) "discbox," comprising a CD, double vinyl and bonus CD of additional material as well as a hardback book, which will ship "on or before Dec. 3," according to the site.
