With 2005's "All the Right Reasons" still sitting in the top 10 of The Billboard 200 after 102 weeks, Nickelback has no plans to rush a follow-up into the marketplace.
"Everything is completely up in the air, and no one's in a hurry to do anything," frontman Chad Kroeger tells Billboard.com. "We just finished up two years touring on this record, and we're all a little crispy."
His older brother, bassist Mike Kroeger, concurs, saying that after seven singles, "I think it's probably time for us to sort of fade into the shadows for a little bit and give everybody a little bit of a breather before we come out with our next stuff. An early return, in my opinion, would be a mistake."
Neverthless, Chad Kroeger notes that he has already ventured into the studio at his home near Vancouver, "laying down a piano part for this, a guitar part for that," but, he says, that's mostly for memory's sake.
"Before it was just like, 'I'll remember it and it's no big deal' and yada, yada, yada," he explains with a laugh. "Now it's, like, ideas are precious. You really want to make sure once you've got one, you don't forget it.
"Can we make a better record than 'All the Right Reasons?'" he continues. "I don't know. It's gonna be really tough to make this great, new record jam-packed full of magical moments that we're gonna love and the fans are gonna love. That's all in the stars at the moment."
Fans will be able to hear some new Chad Kroeger music sooner, however, with his guest appearance on the upcoming "Ultimate Santana" collection on the track "Into the Night." "I had this tune," Kroeger recalls, "and it had this very Latin feel to it, so we went over to (Carlos) Santana to see if he would be interested in jamming with it. We flew down to San Francisco and had Carlos play all his guitar parts on it and his guys came in and they all laid down incredible parts. It turned out just amazing."
Kroeger previously worked with Santana on the hit "Why Don't You & I" from 2002's "Shaman," though he was replaced on the single by Alex Band of the Calling when Nickelback's label, Roadrunner Records, refused permission for Kroeger. The Kroeger-sung version of the song is slated to appear on "Ultimate Santana," which is due Oct. 16 via Arista.
