Faulkner, West Assume Control On U.K. Charts

Comments

British singer/songwriter Newton Faulkner capped his impressive emergence as a U.K. chart presence yesterday (Aug. 26) by following the top 10 single "Dream Catch Me" (Ugly Truth) with a No. 1 debut for the album "Hand Built by Robots." Meanwhile on the singles chart, Kanye West snagged a second week at No. 1 with the Daft Punk-sampling "Stronger" (Def Jam).

Surrey-born Faulkner, 22, had spent three weeks at No. 3 with his debut album before unseating Elvis Presley's "The King" (RCA/Sony BMG), which entered at the top last week. Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" (Universal Island) rose 4-3 on the new survey while Richard Hawley opened at No .6 with "Lady's Bridge" (Mute). The Pigeon Detectives climbed 11-9 with "Wait for Me" (Dance To The Radio).

Chris Daughtry's eponymous band scored a No. 13 entry in the U.K. with its self-titled, multi-platinum U.S. debut for Epic, while former Savage Garden member Darren Hayes arrived at No. 14 with "This Delicate Thing We've Made" (Powdered Sugar).

West's second week atop the singles chart stopped Sean Kingston's U.S. chart-topper "Beautiful Girls" (RCA) from repeating the feat in Britain. The Jamaican-American debuted at No. 2, while Gym Class Heroes jumped 8-5 with "Clothes Off!!!" (Decaydance/Fuelled BY Ramen).

Hard-Fi improved 12-7 with "Suburban Knights" (Necessary/Atlantic) and there was a 23-10 climb for "Ayo Technology" (Interscope) by 50 Cent featuring Justin Timberlake & Timbaland. Another single in RCA's new Elvis Presley reissue series made the top 20: "Blue Suede Shoes" at No. 13. A public domain Presley track, "My Baby Left Me," debuted at No. 19 after its release by Memphis Recording Service. Eve posted a 35-18 climb with "Tambourine" (Geffen) and the Kaiser Chiefs opened at No. 22 with "The Angry Mob" (B Unique/Polydor).

On Billboard's pan-European sales charts, Mika's "Life in Cartoon Motion" (Casablanca/Universal Island) holds the top place on Billboard's composite European Top 100 Albums survey for a fourth week. But Rihanna's 11-week run at No. 1 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles with "Umbrella" (Def Jam) featuring Jay-Z was ended by Timbaland's "The Way I Are" (Interscope) featuring DOE and Keri Hilson.
