Billboard Bits: MTV VMAs, Seal, The Jesus & Mary Chain

Comments

Common, Nelly Furtado, Gym Class Heroes, Cee-Lo, T-Pain, Lil' Wayne and Daniel Merriweather have joined the performance lineup for the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, which also features Timbaland, Kanye West, Fall Out Boy, Amy Winehouse, Chris Brown, Foo Fighters and Rihanna. The event will air live Sept. 9 from the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

Britney Spears is also rumored to be appearing on the show in some fashion, but details have yet to be announced.

As previously reported, Beyonce and Justin Timberlake lead the nominations with seven each. The two artists will square off in the video of the year category, with their songs "Irreplaceable" and "What Goes Around ... Comes Around" competing against Amy Winehouse's "Rehab," Justice's "Dance," Kanye West's "Stronger" and Rihanna's "Umbrella" featuring Jay-Z.

Seal has penciled in a Nov. 20 release date for "System," his first Warner Bros. album in four years. Madonna collaborator Stuart Price is serving as co-producer on the set and has added his touch to upbeat tracks such as "Amazing" and "The Right Life."

"The new record is really shaping up and is turning out to be much of a dance record," Seal said
earlier this year. "This is something that I've always wanted to do seeing as most will say that dance is my background. Over the years I've somehow become more known for my ballads which I also love doing but dance music has always been close to my heart. Make no mistake, there will also be a killer ballad or three on this record but at this point in my life I really want to make something that is more dance directed."

After reuniting earlier this year for its first shows in nearly a decade, the Jesus & Mary Chain is heading into the studio to make its first new album since 1998's "Munki." No release date or label affiliation has been announced for the project.

In addition, the group has confirmed five fall shows on the West Coast: Oct. 20 in Las Vegas, Oct. 22 in Anaheim, Calif., Oct. 23 in Los Angeles and Oct. 26-27 in San Francisco. Lemonheads frontman Evan Dando will open all dates, while Soulsavers, which features Mark Lanegan, are on the bill for the last three shows.
