Barenaked Ladies' recent concert in suburban Detroit will live on for posterity -- and PBS. The Canadian quintet filmed the two-hour show Friday (June 15) at the DTE Energy Music Theatre for a live DVD, due out later this year on Shout! Factory in the U.S. and Morningstar in Canada.
It will also be shown on public television in late 2007 or early 2008, according to Jerry Samuels, who's executive producing the project for Los Angeles-based GroovePix Entertainment. Specific release and telecast dates have not been determined.
Samuels told Billboard.com that Friday's 24-song show will be edited down to about an hour for PBS and probably 15 songs for the DVD. The latter will also include behind-the-scenes footage of the crew setting up the stage, the pre-concert sound check and backstage vignettes.
In its usual spirited and comedic fashion, the Canadian quintet played a two-hour-plus assortment of its biggest hits -- opening with "One Week" and also including "The Old Apartment," "Pinch Me," "It's All Been Done," "Brian Wilson" and "If I Had $1000000" -- along with fan favorites such as "Alcohol," "Get in Line" and "Call & Answer" and a three-song mid-show acoustic set.
The group also took off on semi ad-libbed exchanges, including one about a "cowboy-hatted maraca man" on the DTE lawn, and staged a bit of "West Side Story"-style choreography at the end of "Angry People." A female fan seated close to the stage flashed the group at the end of that song, which Samuels said was captured by one of the cameras.
Friday's show was one of only four BNL is playing this summer, as the individual band members are focusing on solo work and their families. "We've kind of figured it out after 18 years or so of nonstop touring that it's good to be home when the kids are home in the summertime," drummer Tyler Stewart told Billboard.com. "We're just trying to make more of an effort to balance out our lives, and everyone can do what they like to do and also have time for the band."
Stewart said the members of BNL will spend most of the summer on personal projects. Singer/guitarists Steven Page and Ed Robertson are each working on Canadian TV shows -- Page's about his current genealogical search, Robertson's a second season of "Ed's Up," a well-received reality show in which he does "bad" jobs like wrestling alligators in order to extract blood for medical applications.
Multi-instrumentalist Kevin Hearn is working on solo material, while bassist Jim Creeggan is preparing for the arrival of his second child. Stewart expects BNL to return to the studio this fall and added that the band is considering a children's album.
