Judy Hopes To Reheat Modest Mouse Leftovers

Comments

At least one member of Modest Mouse hopes to turn some of the group's old material into a new release in the near future.

Bassist Eric Judy tells Billboard.com that he'd like the group's next release to be comprised of songs that were written for but left off of the band's most recent albums, 2004's platinum "Good News For People Who Love Bad News" and this year's chart-topping "We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank."

"We have three or four songs from ('Good News...') that were pretty much almost done, but they were never finished," Judy explains. "And then there were four songs off ('We Were Dead...') that we didn't finish but we recorded the basic tracks and structures. Basically due to time constraints we had to pick songs to leave out of both records.

Judy says that one of the songs left off "We Were Dead..." was a key component to the album's original concept, a "Survivor"-style story about a group of people adrift in a lifeboat. "A lot of the songs still tie into it," Judy explains. "But there's one song in particular which is, lyrically, a big part of the story that got left off the record."

Modest Mouse's current focus, however, is on its tour to support "We Were Dead...," which is cruising North America until mid-May, when the group heads to the U.K. and Europe. The group is also readying its next single, which Judy says will likely be "Missed the Boat," to follow the album's lead track, "Dashboard."

"It started with my little guitar riff that I wrote in my kitchen with my little son, just hanging around," Judy recalls. "After that it was the same story -- we jammed a little bit and talked about it and we write parts and go into the studio and refine it even a little bit more. That's how we work best."
