Will Bob Seger be the next major artist to bolt from Capitol Records' roster?
Today (March 27), Seger's management company issued a photo of him and his Silver Bullet Band receiving platinum album plaques for last year's "Face the Promise" at the final show of his tour on March 17 in Detroit. The caption read "Will Seger Turn the Page?" and noted that "ironically, new label representatives for Capitol Records, which has been Seger's home for more than 40 years, did not attend" the presentation.
The caption also confirmed that Seger will release a live CD/DVD this fall from home town shows at Detroit's Cobo Arena and the Palace of Auburn Hills. Seger is currently viewing the material taped at the shows and soundchecks. No title or release date has yet been determined.
The implication is that Seger will consider other options for releasing the live project. He was definitely affected by the loss of longtime staffers when Capitol and Virgin Records merged operations earlier this year and gave on-stage shout-outs to his longtime label publicist Judi Kerr and to former sales vice-president Joe McFadden, who headed Capitol's catalog division.
A Seger source tells Billboard.com, "We don't know anybody there anymore. All the guys that got us to do ('Face the Promise') are gone." Seger's publicist could not be reached for comment at deadline.
Seger was with Capitol for his first national hit, "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" in 1969, and save for three albums in the early '70s, has been with the label ever since, though he currently has no formal contract with the company and owns the masters for his latest recordings.
Last week, Paul McCartney announced that he was leaving Capitol and that his next album, due in June, would be released by Starbucks' Hear Music label.
