Explosions In The Sky Ready New Album, Tour

Comments

Instrumental indie rock outfit Explosions In The Sky will on Feb. 20 release "All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone," the follow-up to 2003's "The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place," and its first since composing the score for the 2004 film "Friday Night Lights." The band's music is still being heard by millions on any given Wednesday, as the NBC series of the same name has featured Explosions songs in a number of episodes.

"As far as the TV show is concerned, it's really just a matter of [NBC] licensing songs for each episode, as opposed to the creative input we had with the movie," says drummer Chris Hrasky. "We are glad that the show is actually quite good. We were worried about that initially, and it seems like the music is used pretty well."

"The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place" has sold 55,000 units in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, far and away the band's most successful effort. "I Miss Everyone" is a more concise offering, with three cuts clocking in at under 6 minutes, a rarity for the band. Explosions continues to play with loud/soft dynamics, delivering melancholic deconstructions of heavy-hitting rock anthems.

"We don't want to repeat ourselves, and we actually scrapped six months worth of songs because of that," Hrasky says. "We were sounding a little too much like things we had done before. I think these songs flow better. We wanted it to be more visceral sounding, a little bit more uncomfortable than our previous records. We want it to feel like it's about to fly out of control."

The band turned down offers from larger labels to stick with New York-based Temporary Residence Limited for the release of "All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone." Says manager Ben Dickey, "They're one of our deepest and first supporters, and no one takes that lightly. We're not really in a major-label system where we're going to try to bail when the deal is done"

The band will release a limited-edition version of the album, which will include a bonus disc of remixes from Four Tet, Jesu and Adem. Confined to 20,000 units, the two-CD set will be available on the band's upcoming tour and at most independent retailers.

After a pair of shows in New York in late February, Explosions will head overseas for a few dates before launching a brief U.S. tour on March 5 in its home city of Austin, Texas. "Our live show is a little weird," Hrasky says. "We just kind of start and there's no banter. It's one long song, almost."
