Son Volt 'Searches' For New Sounds

Comments

Son Volt will unveil its fifth full-length, "The Search," on March 6 via Transmit Sound/Legacy. The follow-up to 2005's "Okemah and the Melody of Riot" was produced by frontman Jay Farrar, who suggests that the title is indicative of the band's increasingly diversified sound.

"Literally, the approach to this record was a search, seeking different instrumentation and the way it sounded," Farrar tells Billboard.com. "Oftentimes, I think the process is about the search rather than the find."

"The Search" finds Son Volt toying with more electric atmospheres, horns and pedal loops. Farrar was joined again by drummer Dave Bryson, bassist Andrew Duplantis and guitarist Brad Rice. A new addition was keyboardist Derry DeBorja, but the entire backing crew helped to expand what Farrar describes as the "underlying textures." Shannon McNally also contributes harmony vocals on the album's "Highways and Cigarettes."

"This whole result comes from the fact that the band was playing a lot together," Farrar says. "It wasn't so much of a challenge to expand our whole sound. It was actually very liberating."

Farrar, who is based out of St. Louis, recently finished a touring stint with his side project, Gob Iron, and has released four solo records. "But I knew right away -- as I started writing these songs -- that they'd be for the band," he says.

Son Volt will hit the road in support of "The Search" at the end of March.
