The group has been working with producer Jason Lader (Vietnam) and recording at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, marking "the first time we've worked in a legitimate studio. It was a bit scary at first; the Rolling Stones recorded there, and Sheryl Crow. It was unusual for us, but we ended up feeling comfortable there."
After a year-long band break that allowed Lewis to tour in support of "Rabbit Fur Coat," her critically acclaimed album with the Watson Twins, the singer and multi-instrumentalist says it was good to get back in a group mode. "I wanted to write songs that rocked a little bit more and kind of had a more band feel to them," she says. "I was kind of longing for a more complicated approach, I guess."
Rilo Kiley's next step, according to Lewis, will be assembling an album from the songs they've recorded, which she expects to be a "difficult process. In a band, it's a bit of a compromise. It's a democracy. Everybody has to be happy. So hopefully we can find a way to make it come together."
Lewis predicts that Rilo Kiley's album will come out some time during the first half of 2007. Meanwhile, she recently recorded a version of "Little Boxes" to run over the credits of Showtime's "Weeds" and is finishing up tour dates in support of "Rabbit Fur Coat."
