Rossi Wins 'Rock Star,' But Will He Front Supernova?

Comments

The search for Supernova's frontman came to an end tonight (Sept. 13) as punk rocker Lukas Rossi was named the winning vocalist of the CBS reality show "Rock Star: Supernova." But the legal dispute over the new band's name is far from over.

With two aspiring rockers left, Tommy Lee finally announced that his band had selected the edgy, spiky-haired Rossi as its lead singer, sending home the last opponent, Dilana. Beforehand, the Canadian frontman had dazzled Lee and bandmates Gilby Clarke and Jason Newsted with the Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony." After Lee's announcement, Rossi was called onstage to perform two Supernova songs with his new band, including "Be Yourself."

Earlier, Dilana performed a haunting rendition of the Cranberries' "Zombie." The night started out with four contestants, but Icelander Magni was eliminated in the first part of the show, as was Australian Toby Rand.

Winner Rossi is expected to rush into the studio to finalize Supernova's debut album, produced by Butch Walker and due Nov. 21 via Epic. The band will stage its first live performance on Dec. 31 in Las Vegas before embarking on a five-week North American tour.

But whether Rossi will really front a band with the name Supernova remains uncertain. Only hours before the show, word broke that a federal judge in California issued a preliminary injunction ordering the show's producers to stop using the name until a full trial or another court order finally decides a trademark dispute.

In June, a 1990s punk band that performed as both Supernova From Cynot3 and Supernova sued Mark Burnett Productions, CBS and others for infringing the name Supernova. The California-based trio released four albums and is best known for its song "Chewbacca," featured in the cult movie "Clerks."

"Rock Star: Supernova" premiered on July 5, hosted by Brooke Burke and Dave Navarro. The Panic Channel, Navarro's new band, will support Supernova on its tour along with some of this season's contestants.
