Chris Cornell has tapped Steve Lillywhite (U2, Morrissey) to produce his second solo album, which will be released early next year via Interscope. "I'm always writing," Cornell told Billboard.com last week. "There's a song here, a song there that I wouldn't be able to put on an Audioslave record. Audioslave's really been more of a collaboration, anyway, and I'm a guy that writes a lot of songs, and I write a lot by myself."
Cornell also co-wrote "You Know My Name," the theme song for the new James Bond film "Casino Royale," with composer David Arnold. He described the track as "more uptempo and a little more aggressive than any other Bond theme has been, maybe since Paul McCartney ['Live and Let Die']. It has an orchestra, but it also has some angry sounding guitar, and it's got feedback."
As previously reported, Audioslave's third album, "Revelations," arrives Sept. 5 via Epic.
Late Mamas & the Papas principal John Phillips' 1969 solo album, "John, the Wolfking of L.A.," will be released on CD for the first time in the United States Sept. 12 via Varese Vintage.
The original 10-track release has been augmented with the previously unreleased bonus tracks "Shady," "Lonely Children," "Lady Genevieve," "Black Girl," "French Man," "16MM Baby" and "Wolfking of L.A.," as well as the original single version of "Mississippi."
Phillips was backed on the album by numerous noted session musicians, including Elvis Presley's band and members of the Wrecking Crew. It was the only solo project released in Phillips' lifetime; two other albums that had been in the works for decades finally appeared shortly after his 2001 death.
As tipped here in February, indie rock act the Walkmen will on Oct. 24 issue a song-by-song recreation of Harry Nilsson's 1974 album "Pussy Cats." The Record Collection set will be accompanied by a 20-minute behind-the-scenes DVD shot by Norman Coady.
The album was recorded while the Walkmen were finishing their latest studio album, "A Hundred Miles Off." It features guest appearances by Make Up vocalist Ian Svenonius, Mazarin's Quentin Stoltzfus, Tomorrow's Friend's Alessandra Maria and Rockwell, plus a 41-strong choir and a string quartet.
The Walkmen are planning a handful of complete performances of the album following its release.
