With former Pavement bassist Mark Ibold filling the gap left by departed multi-instrumentalist Jim O'Rourke, the band tore through "Rather Ripped" in its entirety. Kim Gordon quickly commanded the stage on "Reena," its lyric "You keep me coming home again" tailor-made for the adoring sold-out crowd.
Highlighted by "Sleeping Around," "What a Waste," and the Lee Ranaldo-sung "Rats," the set flew by in less than an hour. The group dusted off "Eric's Trip" from 1988's "Daydream Nation" for its first encore, followed by the Gordon-shrieked "Shaking Hell" from 1983's "Confusion is Sex/Kill Yr. Idols."
The show was filmed for potential release by a team directed by Braden King; footage may also wind up in a video for the new album's "Do You Believe in Rapture."
Sonic Youth now heads out for headlining dates through July 4 in Reno, Nev., after which it will open a host of West Coast shows for Pearl Jam. A run of dates with Flaming Lips kicks off Aug. 24 in St. Paul, Minn.
